The protein contains 143 amino acids for an estimated molecular weight of 15808 Da.
Component of the ribosome, a large ribonucleoprotein complex responsible for the synthesis of proteins in the cell (PubMed:28257692, PubMed:23636399, PubMed:25957688, PubMed:25901680). The small ribosomal subunit (SSU) binds messenger RNAs (mRNAs) and translates the encoded message by selecting cognate aminoacyl-transfer RNA (tRNA) molecules. The large subunit (LSU) contains the ribosomal catalytic site termed the peptidyl transferase center (PTC), which catalyzes the formation of peptide bonds, thereby polymerizing the amino acids delivered by tRNAs into a polypeptide chain. The nascent polypeptides leave the ribosome through a tunnel in the LSU and interact with protein factors that function in enzymatic processing, targeting, and the membrane insertion of nascent chains at the exit of the ribosomal tunnel (PubMed:23636399, PubMed:25957688, PubMed:25901680). Plays an important role in translational accuracy (PubMed:28257692). (updated: March 28, 2018)

The following articles were analysed to gather the proteome content of erythrocytes.
The gene or protein list provided in the studies were processed using the ID mapping API of Uniprot in September 2018. The number of proteins identified and mapped without ambiguity in these studies is indicated below.
Only Swiss-Prot entries (reviewed) were considered for protein evidence assignation.

The reference OMIM entry for this protein is 603683
The mammalian ribosome is composed of 4 RNA species (see 180450) and approximately 80 different proteins. Hori et al. (1993) isolated a cDNA encoding ribosomal protein S23 (RPS23) from a human liver cancer cell line (HepG2) cDNA library. The deduced RPS23 protein has 143 amino acids. Northern blot analysis detected an approximately 550-bp RPS23 transcript in HepG2 cells. By somatic cell hybrid and radiation hybrid mapping analyses, Kenmochi et al. (1998) mapped the RPS23 gene to 5q. ... More on the omim web site
